Requests to perform more than one major surgical procedure per animal must be approved by the ACUC. Approval must be based on scientific requirements of the protocol.

Surgery Facilities:

• Major operative procedures on non-rodents (rabbits, cats, non-human primates, etc.) will be conducted only in facilities intended for that purpose which shall be operated and maintained under aseptic conditions

• The design of a surgical facility should accommodate the species to be operated on and the complexity of the procedures to be performed
